COMMON QUESTIONS

What is laser?
Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It beams highly concentrated light into hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light that in result destroys the hair if the hair is in the active growth stage.

Who can get laser?
Someone who doesn't have any medical contraindications.

Someone who can comfortably shave before their laser procedure.

Someone that can commit to staying out of the sun before and after their treatment.

Someone who has not been sunburned or had any tanning (bed or spray) in the last 7 days.

Patients with light skin & dark hair.

Someone that does not have any tattoos in the area wanting to be lasered.

Is it expensive to Laser?
Laser has a higher price point as it is a medical procedure with higher supply costs. The up front cost can be higher but depending on individual results can save you money long term.

Does Laser hurt?
The feelings depends on your pain tolerance but most say its relatively painless! People will compare it to the feeling of a rubber band being snapped against the skin. Our laser hair removal machines send a quick spurt of cryogen to rapidly cool the skin before each zap causing a cooling and numbing sensation before the laser beam.

What is Cryogen?
Cryogen is a gas that extracts heat and cools the skin. In return Cryogen also protects the epidermis of the skin when performing laser treatments.

What can cause laser not to be effective?
Not having hair in the active growth stage where the hair is attached to the hair follicle, The hair not being dark enough for the laser to attract to & the skin being to dark where the laser cannot find the hair to be able to damage the follicle.

Do hormones play a role in my hair growth?
YES! Estrogen and progesterone prolong your hair being in the anagen (growth stage) which can cause an increase of hair being present all at the same time. Hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy & menopause all are usually effected with excessive hair growth.

Is Laser permanent?
The reduction you receive is permanent, but it is impossible to achieve 100% removal of every single follicle in a given area. Over the course of treatment your hair and the amount of it that you have will change dramatically - and we mean dramatically. What starts off as rough, coarse and thick hair will eventually become soft, thin and light hair. You will have areas where the hair has completely disappeared and some areas with sporadic light hairs remain. These hairs will be picked up on your subsequent touch up treatments.

Touch up treatments are recommended to keep these finer hairs away and are typically needed 2-3 times a year.

I have light hair! Can I get laser?
Laser hair removal will work on thin hairs that contain dark pigment, laser has no effect on light colored hairs that are blonde, red, grey or white in color as they don’t contain enough pigment for the laser to absorb into.

Whats the difference between IPL and Laser?
Lasers are most selective and more effective at absorbing melanin, meaning fewer treatments are required.

There has been more published clinical evidence to support the effectiveness of laser treatments.

Lasers penetrate deeper into tissues to specifically target hair structures. Laser’s penetrate approximately 4-5mm specifically designed to target hair structures, while most IPL’s only target 2mm which is not deep enough to target these structures effectively.

Lasers have more advanced cooling systems meaning more comfortable treatments.

Whats the difference between Waxing & Laser?
The laser beam damages the hair follicle causing hair not to grow. Waxing removes the hair from the root causing trauma to the hair follicle which will lead to the weakening of the hair & more sparse hair regrowth.

How many laser sessions will I need?
This is all down to the individual. Below is an average number of sessions of someone who has pale skin, dark hair that is dense, has no underlying medical issues and attends for their sessions and top up sessions at the time frame given to them.

- Face 6-12 Sessions (Most difficult areas to treat, due to hair being finer and more follicles being present)

- Bikini and Underarm: 6-10 (Labia is one of the most difficult areas here, due to skin color being darker)
- Large areas, legs/arms etc 6-10 (Knees, Upper thighs due to thick skin on knees or finer hairs on thighs)

- Mans Back/Chest 12-15 sessions due to hair being very strong, coarse and resilient to laser.

After these sessions have been completed maintenance sessions are required, most people will need an average of 2-3 maintenance sessions a year.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START YOUR LASER TREATMENTS

Why do I need to have a consultation before my laser?
This is probably the most important part of your treatment as required my law because technically your laser hair removal service is considered a Medical Service. Your consultation is complimentary and can be done on a separate Zoom call with our Nurse Practitioner, or you can meet with her before your service in person. Our Medical Staff will check through your medical history, assess your skin and hair to ensure you are suitable and answer any questions you may have regarding treatment.

Can I wax during my laser treatments?
I mean you can do anything you would like to do but we suggest not doing waxing while getting laser treatments! For laser to work you need to have hair actively growing out of the follicle as the hair melanin attracts light. When the laser beams the hair attracts the laser leading it to the hair follicle which then destroys that follicle causing hair not to regrow in that area. When you wax your completely moving he hair from the follicle so there is nothing for the laser to attract too resulting in no damage to the hair follicle. Also if you happen to wax in between your laser, when you go to laser the chances of all of your hair being present are slim which will affect your results.

When should I stop waxing if I want to Laser?
We recommend you stop waxing 4-6 weeks before your first laser treatment to have as much hair growth as possible present for best results.

Do I need to do anything before my sessions?
Ensure the treatment area is free from tan - real or fake tan and lightly exfoliate approx 5 days before your first session.

Do not apply any moisturizer, cream, oil or lotion to the treatment area, Aloe Vera is the only thing we would recommend if skin is irritated from shaving.

Close shave the area the night before and not the day of treatment, because when you shave you slightly exfoliate and irritate the area so allow the extra time overnight for the skin to regenerate and make treatment more comfortable. Shaving the day of your treatment will cause your skin to feel more sensitive throughout the treatment and may limit the amount of energy we can use due to skin sensitivity.

Can I use a tanning bed while getting Laser done?
No, using sunbeds is extremely dangerous while having laser hair removal and must be avoided at all times. You will seriously damage your skin if you use sunbeds during the course of your treatments.

Can I fake tan while getting Laser done?
Yes, you can apply Fake Tan approximately 4-5 days after your session and use it in between each session. It is extremely important that you don’t use any tan for a week before your treatment and ensure that you are exfoliating your skin daily to remove any residue. If there is any residue on the skin we cannot perform your treatment until all tan is removed.

Why shouldn't I tan?
Tanning does have an impact on the amount of sessions needed and will impact on your results. This is more prevalent when you begin your treatments as it is important to have at least 6-8 treatments.

When you tan and stimulate the melanin within the skin cells we would have to wait at least 8-10 weeks before repeating. This long gap in-between sessions can see an increase in density and growth in the hair. And because we are missing growth cycles due to gap in treatments you may see hair growth cycles of hair coming through at the same time. This is normal and will be the reason why potentially more sessions may be needed.

Can I take ibuprofen to help with the pain?
Please do not take Ibuprofen for 48 hours before your laser hair removal session, this medication may cause bruising after laser for certain people.

How long should I go in between laser sessions?
This differs from person to person but on average a 4-6 week gap initially depending on the area being treated.

We typically would recommend every 4 weeks. This does depend on the rate of regrowth. Your treatment area will be continually assessed throughout your course of treatment and your Nurse will recommend when you should return for your next session.

How soon after my Laser can I start exfoliating?
Depending on how sensitive your skin is after laser it is quite safe to start lightly exfoliating about 3-4 days after your treatment, just be gentle for the first week or so. We really do recommend exfoliating in between your laser appointments to avoid ingrown hairs forming under the skin.

What do I do after my treatments?
Directly after laser your skin will be sensitive so please refrain from the following.

- Hot showers/baths, steam rooms, saunas, swimming pool and exercise for 24-48hrs

- Don’t exfoliate for 3-4 days and use light exfoliation methods

-Don’t use sun beds on the area or expose the area to direct sunlight at all while having laser

- Don’t use perfumed products or thick creams for 48hrs

- Don’t wear tight clothes like skinny jeans or nylon tights (if having your legs treated) for 48hrs as they will cause heat build up and friction on the area and may aggravate skin

- All of the above may cause skin to become irritated in the treated area, it is important that you follow these guidelines to ensure your skin safety.

What happens after I complete my Laser treatments?
Because every person is different everyone has individual results, at the end of your treatments you may notice some blonde hairs left in the treatment area. If needed you may absolutely wax those when you are done! We advise that yearly you complete 4-6 touch ups to maintain results.
